Stratification in Buffer Vessels & Thermal Storage Tanks: Why Mibec’s Expertise Matters

Our technical trainee Finley has been learning about stratification in buffer tanks, so we asked him to explain why it is important and to highlight our in-house expertise and specialist tank solutions.

What Is Stratification?

Effective stratification inside thermal storage tanks is essential for achieving maximum system efficiency, rapid heat delivery, and reliable heating performance.

At Mibec, our in-depth understanding of tank behaviour—combined with our specialist in-house diffuser and baffle designs—allows us to engineer solutions that maintain strong thermal layering even in challenging conditions.

In any heating system storage tank, water naturally separates into layers based on temperature. Hot water, being less dense, rises to the top, while cooler, denser water sinks to the bottom.

This natural stratification is extremely beneficial because it allows:

  • Immediate access to hot water from the top of the tank
  • A cooler lower section that can efficiently accept return water to be reheated
  • Improved system responsiveness and energy efficiency

The better a tank maintains this layering, the more effectively it performs.

The Role of Tank Proportions

Tank geometry has a major impact on how well stratification can form and remain stable.

A tall, narrow tank helps maintain good separation between hot and cold layers. With a smaller cross-sectional area and a greater height:

  • Buoyancy-driven separation is more stable
  • Vertical temperature layers are less disturbed
  • Inflows cause less turbulence and mixing

For this reason, Mibec frequently recommends a minimum height-to-diameter ratio of 2:1.

Example: A tank 1m wide should ideally be at least 2m tall.

When the Height-to-Width Ratio Is Too Low

Short, wide tanks present a challenge. Their natural stratification is weaker because water movement spreads horizontally, causing greater mixing.

In these cases, engineered internal features become essential:

  • Internal baffle plates
  • Stratification or “sparged” pipes
  • Flow-control diffusers

These components guide incoming water into the tank and reduce turbulence—preserving the temperature layers the vessel relies on.

Other Key Factors That Influence Stratification

Even with the ideal tank shape, several design considerations play a crucial role:

Inlet and Outlet Positioning

  • Hot water in through the top
  • Cool water return at the bottom
  • Diffusers or spreader plates slow incoming velocity to prevent mixing

Flow Rates

  • Gentle flow maintains stratification
  • High-velocity flows disrupt the layers and reduce efficiency

Insulation Quality

  • Prevents unwanted heat transfer between layers
  • Reduces convection currents that can disturb stratification

Getting these details right requires experience and precise engineering—something Mibec has been delivering for years.

Mibec’s Proven Solutions for Maximum Stratification

With extensive design experience and CFD-validated performance, Mibec provides engineered components that optimise stratification in both vertical and horizontal stores.
